A 70-year-old man was killed in a landslide in Baghaichhari municipality of Rangamati on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Laxmi Bilas Chakma, a resident of West Lalyaghona area under Ward No 6 of Baghaichhari Municipality.
According to local sources, the incident occurred while Laxmi Bilas was digging a drain to clear wastewater from a cattle farm. A large chunk of soil, along with the roots of a tree, suddenly collapsed on him, leaving him dead on the spot.
Attempts to contact Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Amena Marjan by phone for official confirmation were unsuccessful.
Warnings issued in landslide-prone areas
To prevent a recurrence of the deadly landslides of 2017, the Rangamati district administration has intensified awareness campaigns through public announcements, urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert.
Authorities are also relocating people living in high-risk hill areas to safer locations as heavy rainfall continues across the region.
Meanwhile, a man named Benson Chakma, also known as Badkya Chakma, reportedly died from electrocution in Mahajan Para of Longadu upazila.
The circumstances surrounding the electrocution were not immediately known.
