The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has awarded a special incentive bonus of Tk25,000 each to 6,750 workers and employees involved in handling containers and cargo, recognising their contribution to record handling performance in 2025.
The port authority spent more than Tk16.6 crore from its welfare fund to distribute the incentive, which officials said was aimed at maintaining operational efficiency and labour peace at the country’s principal seaport.
The bonus cheques were distributed at the Chattogram Port Building on Monday. According to the CPA, the incentive was provided to workers engaged in moving containers between vessels and the jetty, as well as handling operations at the port’s outer anchorage.
CPA Secretary and spokesperson Syed Refayet Hamim said the special incentive bonus was financed from the Chittagong Port Container, Cargo Handling Workers and Employees Welfare Fund.
He said the incentive was given in recognition of the workers’ contribution to achieving record container and cargo handling at the port in 2025.
The CPA expects the initiative to help ensure smooth port operations while strengthening labour relations and maintaining a stable working environment.
Official data show that Chattogram Port handled around 3.409 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers in 2025, marking a growth of about 4 per cent from the previous year.
Of the total containers handled, approximately 1.8 million were import containers, while around 1.5 million were export containers.
The port also recorded significant growth in the handling of bulk and other non-containerised cargo during the year. Cargo handling increased by around 11 per cent in 2025, with the port handling approximately 140 million tonnes of cargo, compared with around 124 million tonnes in 2024.
