‘Michael’, the biographical film based on the life of the late King of Pop Michael Jackson, has set a new milestone in global cinema by becoming the highest-grossing biopic of all time, surpassing ‘Oppenheimer’.
Released in 2023, ‘Oppenheimer’, directed by Christopher Nolan, had held the record after earning approximately $975.8 million worldwide. The Oscar-winning film chronicles the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, often referred to as the father of the atomic bomb.
Nearly three years later, ‘Michael’ has overtaken that benchmark. According to the latest box office figures, the film has grossed around $977.4 million globally, making it the highest-grossing biographical film in history. It is also rapidly approaching the coveted $1 billion milestone.
Before breaking ‘Oppenheimer’s record, ‘Michael’ had already surpassed ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ to become the highest-grossing music biopic. The 2018 film, based on the life of Freddie Mercury, earned roughly $904 million worldwide.
Produced by Lionsgate and directed by Antoine Fuqua, the big-budget production stars Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, in the title role. His portrayal has drawn praise from audiences and critics alike for capturing the legendary performer’s dance moves, mannerisms, vocal style and on-screen charisma.
Beyond celebrating Jackson’s extraordinary career, the film also explores his personal life, struggles, loneliness and the controversies that surrounded him. It traces his journey from a child prodigy to one of the most influential and iconic figures in the history of popular music.
