A Dhaka court has sent small-screen actor Md Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, popularly known as Actor Zaher Alvi, to jail after the completion of his two-day remand in a case filed over allegations of abetting his wife’s suicide.
The order was passed on Tuesday by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junayed following a hearing.
Confirming the matter, complainant’s lawyer Afzal Hossain Mridha said, “As no bail petition was filed on behalf of Alvi today, he has been sent to jail after his two-day remand. We have urged the court to ensure a fair investigation by including those involved with him in the probe report.”
Earlier in the day, Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Md Abdul Malek of the Mirpur Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police produced Zaher before the court and sought an order to keep him in jail until the investigation is completed.
In the custody petition, police stated that the accused was interrogated from different angles and had provided important information related to the case, which is assisting the investigation. It further noted that preliminary findings indicate his involvement in the incident and that continued detention is necessary until the investigation is completed.
Alvi had earlier surrendered before the court on 18 June, after which his bail was rejected and he was sent to jail. While in custody, police sought a 10-day remand on 21 June, and the court subsequently granted a two-day remand on 24 June.
According to the case statement, on 28 February, family members rescued Alvi’s wife, Afra Ivnath Khan Ikra, from their residence at DOHS Mirpur in a hanging condition using a scarf from a ceiling fan. She was taken to Kurmitola Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
That night, Ikra’s father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed a case alleging that long-standing family disputes and alleged abuse forced her to take her own life.
Alvi and Ikra were married in 2010 and have a son. In the same case, Alvi’s mother, Nasrin Sultana Shuli, surrendered earlier on 4 June and was granted bail.
