The government will resolve salary-related problems facing madrasa teachers from July by clearing two months’ arrears and ensuring regular payments, Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon said on Tuesday.
The minister made the announcement while speaking at a programme at the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka, where awards were distributed among top educational institutions and meritorious students of Fazil and Kamil levels under the Islamic Arabic University.
He said around 17,000 teachers had been recruited in madrasas through the Non-Government Teachers’ Registration and Certification Authority (NTRCA) since September, calling it a necessary step to address staffing shortages.
“There were no teachers in many posts, so recruitment became urgent. The interim government completed the process quickly, which is a commendable initiative,” he said.
However, the minister said the required budget allocation had not been made, which led to delays in salary payments.
“After the formation of the government, we found that Tk501 crore was needed, but the allocation was not there in the budget. As a result, madrasa teachers could not receive salaries for two months,” he said.
He assured that from July, salaries would be disbursed regularly along with clearance of all outstanding dues.
