A man allegedly died in the custody of the Detective Branch of police in Faridpur, his family said.
He died Sunday morning while under treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
Mirza Ishtiaq Ahmed Pranto, son of Mirza Iskandar Haider of Garakhola village in Madhukhali upazila, was a student of Faridpur Law College.
Relatives said detectives detained Pranto near his home Saturday evening, claiming he was carrying drugs, and took him to Faridpur town. The family was later informed of his death.
His mother, Mirza Khadija Akter Nipa, alleged Pranto was beaten to death and demanded a fair investigation and justice.
Faridpur Superintendent of Police Md Nazrul Islam said Pranto was detained with drugs and taken into custody. He fell ill Sunday morning and was rushed to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where he died.
The SP said there were no injury marks on his body, adding that police are checking whether he was linked to any political party.
Pranto was accused in two cases filed under the Narcotics Control Act.
