The government will begin distributing free school uniforms to primary school students from next July, Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon has announced.

The minister also said the government is working to introduce midday meals across the country and establish multimedia classrooms to modernise teaching methods.

Speaking as chief guest at the inauguration of the “Primary Education Medal Competition 2026” at the Government Physical Education College ground in Mohammadpur on Monday, the minister said extracurricular activities must be given importance alongside academic studies for the physical and mental development of students.

“Steps are being taken to reduce session jams – students will be able to enrol in colleges and universities immediately after exam results are announced,” Milon said.

He added that revised and updated new textbooks will be delivered to schools by December this year.

“Under the leadership of Honourable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, students must be developed as skilled human resources to build ‘Tomorrow’s Bangladesh’,” the minister said, noting that education has been prioritised with a 2 percent of GDP allocation in the budget.

The National Primary Education Medal Competition-2026, organised by the Directorate of Primary Education under the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, featured sports, cultural activities, subject-based quizzes, recitation, and debates.

Approximately 2.18 crore students participated across various levels from school to national level. Four hundred students qualified for the national level.

Director General of the Directorate of Primary Education Shahina Ferdousi, along with other senior officials, students, and parents, were present at the event. The minister distributed prizes to the winners at the conclusion of the competition.
