‘Roid’, directed by Mezbaur Rahman Sumon, is set to be released across around 50 cities in the US and Canada following its domestic Eid release, according to distribution company Bioscope Films.
The film, which follows the director’s acclaimed debut ‘Hawa’, will be released internationally under Bioscope Films’ 55th distribution project. The company has described the rollout as part of its ongoing efforts to expand Bangladeshi cinema’s presence among diaspora audiences.
Bioscope Films head Raj Hamid said the company has been steadily building an international audience over the past few years. He also said the film meets requirements for consideration in the Oscar qualifying process, although no further details were provided.
“We have been able to gradually build this audience over the last few years among expatriate viewers,” he said. “As our 55th film, ‘Roid’ is being prepared with all criteria to be submitted for the Oscar qualifying round. Mezbaur Rahman Sumon is a master maker with a poetic style of filmmaking. Many people across different cities are already enquiring about screenings.”
Director Sumon said the film, which he described as a simple love story, had already attracted interest from audiences who watched it in cinemas. He said he was grateful for viewers sharing their responses.
“I cannot ask anyone to come and watch the film. But those who do watch it and share their feelings, I am grateful to them. ‘Roid’ is a very simple film. It is a love story. The rest you will judge after watching it,” he said.
The film’s lead role is played by Nazifa Tushi, who said she dedicated significant time to the project. Speaking about the international release, she expressed hope that overseas audiences would respond positively.
“I did not take on other work for a long time because of this film. People have seen that on screen. I hope audiences in America and Canada will also be impressed,” she said.
The international release is scheduled to begin in the last week of June across the United States and Canada. The film is distributed by Bioscope Films and produced by Bongo and Facecard, with Kolahal Communication serving as digital consultant.
