Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed officials to ensure that tree plantation efforts are aligned with the specific soil characteristics and environmental conditions of different regions to ensure the success of the government’s ambitious new green initiative.
The PM issued these directives on Saturday while chairing a meeting regarding tree plantation at his Tejgaon office.
During the session, the government’s plan to plant 25 crore trees across the country over the next five years was discussed in detail.
Addressing the meeting, Tarique Rahman emphasised that the survival rate of saplings depends on regional suitability. “The characteristics of the soil are not the same in all regions of the country. Trees must be selected and planted according to the soil and environment of the specific area,” he said, noting that such a strategic approach would play a positive role in maintaining ecological balance.
Highlighting the urgency of the initiative, the Prime Minister pointed out that the impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly apparent. He noted that seasonal cycles have shifted, observing that the regular rainfall once expected in June has changed significantly. He attributed this adverse natural behaviour largely to the depletion of forests and vegetation.
The Prime Minister underscored that tree plantation should be a top priority to protect the environment, tackle climate change, and build a safe world for future generations.
The “Green Horizon” programme is set to be officially inaugurated by the Prime Minister on 14 June at Dulhazra in Cox’s Bazar.
The meeting was attended by the Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Abdul Awal Mintoo, alongside senior ministry and departmental officials. Other notable attendees included the Principal Secretary to the PM, ABM Abdus Sattar; Environment Secretary, Md Raihan Kaosar; Director General of the Department of Environment, Luthfur Rahman; Additional Director General, Ziaul Haque; Chief Conservator of Forests, Md Amir Hosain Chowdhury; and Jamail Bashir JB, a member of the 25 Crore Tree Planting Programme Cell
