The Bangladesh Short Film Forum (BSFF) has expressed concern, anger and disappointment over the suspension of the screening of Bonolota Express in Brahmanbaria, following what it describes as local opposition to a film approved by the Bangladesh Film Certification Board.
In a statement sent to the media on Tuesday, the organisation said that the inability to screen a film that has been cleared with a universal (U) certificate after formal approval raises serious concerns for the country’s cultural space, artistic freedom, the right to free expression and the rule of law.
The statement noted that once a film has been approved through due legal process, its screening being halted due to local pressure, threats or organised objections questions the effectiveness of state approval and the authority governing cultural practice.
The organisation further said that Bangladesh’s film movement has historically seen progressive, humanistic and thought-provoking works face unreasonable objections, rumours and misinformation. It added that in a democratic society, the right to disagree with a work of art exists, but the right to exhibit that work should be equally protected.
According to the statement, opposition should be expressed through criticism, discussion or counter argument rather than by stopping screenings.
The BSFF said that arts and culture are central to a nation’s creative consciousness, human development and democratic mindset. It warned that any attempt to weaken this foundation is harmful not only to the artistic community but to society as a whole.
The organisation has called on the relevant administration, cultural authorities and the government to ensure the safety and constitutional rights of artists, filmmakers, exhibitors and cultural organisations in carrying out legally approved cultural activities. It also demanded effective steps to ensure the smooth organisation of Bonolota Express screenings.
In the concluding section of the statement, the BSFF reaffirmed its position in favour of artistic freedom, the right to free expression and the protection of a free, pluralistic and tolerant cultural environment.
