Eight people, including women and children, were pushed into Bangladesh by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) at the Rongmahal border of Gangni upazila in Meherpur early Thursday morning.

The incident took place between border pillars 136 and 137, where the group was pushed across the barbed-wire fence into Bangladesh by the Indian border guards.

Those pushed in were identified as Titu Sheikh, 45; Ashraful Islam, 35; Aminul Islam, 28; Abejan Khatun, 40; Faima Akter, 27; Nasima Akter, 36; and two children — Rahim, 5, and Rohan, 3.

According to the Rongmahal BGB camp, a BGB patrol team grew suspicious after seeing the eight moving along the border road and intercepted them. During questioning, inconsistencies emerged, prompting BGB members to take them into custody.

The individuals said that they had been released by BSF and forced across the border. Subedar Basharul Islam, commander of the Rongmahal BGB camp, confirmed that the BSF pushed the group into Bangladesh through a gap in the fence.

“They are currently in our custody for further questioning, and legal action will follow after the interrogation,” Islam added.
