Shock has descended on Tollywood following the mysterious death of acclaimed filmmaker Anik Dutta. The director reportedly fell from the rooftop of his residential building in Gariahat, Kolkata, on Wednesday afternoon and sustained critical injuries. He was later taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
However, several questions have emerged surrounding the incident. A handwritten note was reportedly recovered from the rooftop where the filmmaker fell.
According to police sources, the note read: “No one is responsible for my death.” The single line has deepened the mystery, prompting speculation that the incident may have been a suicide. Investigators, however, are not yet drawing any conclusions.
Police rushed to Dutta’s residence shortly after the incident and cordoned off the area. The filmmaker was found lying in a bloodied condition before being taken to a private hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
His body has been sent for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Meanwhile, reports suggest that his only daughter, Aishi Dutta, who is currently in Mumbai, is returning to Kolkata.
Known for his distinctive cinematic style in Bengali cinema, Dutta first rose to prominence with his debut feature film Bhooter Bhabishyat after transitioning from the advertising industry to filmmaking. The satirical comedy received widespread acclaim for its sharp commentary on society, politics and culture.
Later, through Aparajito, he paid tribute to legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray, reflecting his admiration and inspiration drawn from the iconic auteur. Actor Jeetu Kamal portrayed Ray in the film.
Dutta also carved out a unique space in Bengali cinema with films such as Ashchorjyo Prodeep, Meghnadbodh Rohoshyo, Bhobishyoter Bhoot and Borunbabur Bondhu. His latest release, Joto Kando Kolkatatei, hit theatres last year.
