Two people, including a former leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, were killed and two others injured in a road accident in Jashore early Thursday morning.
The accident occurred around 4 am on the Jashore-Benapole highway in the Natunhat area of Jashore Sadar upazila.
The deceased have been identified as Masudur Rahman Milon, 40, former sports secretary of Jashore District Chhatra League, and Jui, 30, wife of Liton Hossain from the Sarathi Mill area of Upashahar. The injured are Mamun, 32, son of Farid Hossain from Katakhali Betaga village in Fakirhat upazila of Bagerhat, and Masud, 45, son of the late Nur Islam from Erenda village in Jashore Sadar upazila.
According to police, citing eyewitnesses, the victims were traveling towards Benapole in a private car from Jashore town. As the vehicle reached the Natunhat area, it lost control and crashed into a roadside tree. Jui and Milon died on the spot, while Mamun and Masud were seriously injured.
Locals rescued the injured and admitted them to Jashore General Hospital, where doctors said their condition is critical. The bodies of the deceased have been sent to the hospital morgue.
Officer-in-Charge of Jashore Kotwali Police Station, Abul Hasnat, said a police team was immediately dispatched to the scene after the accident, and legal procedures are underway.
