Former Rail Minister Nurul Islam Sujan has been shown arrested in a case involving the murder of Md Jahangir filed with the Jatrabari Police Station.
Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Huq issued the order on Tuesday following an application from the investigating officer.
Sub-Inspector Mohin of the prosecution department confirmed the development, stating that the court has sent the accused to jail and fixed 20 May for a hearing regarding his bail.
Sujan is named as the 13th accused in the case.
During the proceedings, Public Prosecutor Omar Faruqi opposed the bail plea, while the defence lawyers sought bail for the former minister.
The case was filed by Md Omar Faruq, the younger brother of the deceased.
According to the case statement, Md Jahangir, 54, sustained critical bullet injuries on 20 July in Shanir Akhra area of Jatrabari during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
He later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Inspector Md Shamim Hossain of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the investigating officer, applied to the court to have Sujan shown arrested to ensure a proper investigation and to uncover the “mystery” of the incident.
The application stated that preliminary investigations suggest the accused was involved in the planning and commission of the crime.
Notably, the former rail minister had previously secured bail from the High Court in three other cases on 5 May.
