A court in Joypurhat sent seven Awami League leaders to jail on Thursday after rejecting their bail petitions in multiple cases, including murder, linked to the July student-led movement.
The accused surrendered before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court seeking bail, but the court dismissed their pleas and ordered their detention.
Joypurhat Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Milon Chandra Pal passed the order.
The leaders were later taken to Joypurhat District Jail under tight security.
The jailed leaders are Kalai upazila Awami League General Secretary Fazlur Rahman, Kalai upazila Awami League Vice President and Punot Union Parishad Chairman Abdul Kuddus Fakir, Jindarpur union Awami League President Rafiqul Islam, Kalai upazila Jubo League President and Jindarpur Union Parishad Chairman Ziaur Rahman, Ahmedabad union Awami League President Akbar Ali, Kalai upazila Awami League Member Enamul Hossain Fakir, and former student leader Minhajur Rahman Mithun.
Joypurhat District and Sessions Judge Court Public Prosecutor Advocate Shahanur Rahman Shahin confirmed the development.
