Bangladesh Bank’s Cashless Bangladesh Initiative moved forward with a day-long programme in Narayanganj on Sunday, where Eastern Bank PLC acted as the lead bank to promote digital payments and reduce reliance on cash.
The programme began with a public awareness rally from Central Shaheed Minar to Narayanganj Club, followed by a seminar focusing on expanding digital transaction systems and strengthening financial inclusion, organisers said in a press release.
Bangladesh Bank Executive Director Arif Hossain Khan attended the seminar as chief guest, while Narayanganj Additional Deputy Commissioner for Development and HR Management Md Sakhawat Hossain and Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police Md Hashinuzzaman joined as special guests.
Bangladesh Bank Director of Payment Systems Department-1 ANM Moinul Kabir chaired the session. Eastern Bank PLC Deputy Managing Director and Head of Retail and SME Banking M Khorshed Anwar represented the bank.
Officials outlined the objectives, progress and future roadmap of the initiative, emphasising the benefits, security and growing importance of digital payments in driving financial inclusion across Bangladesh.
Participants also shared real-life experiences during an open discussion, while officials addressed questions and concerns around digital transaction systems.
Following the seminar, participants visited local markets to observe how digital payments are being used at the grassroots level.
Eastern Bank PLC Head of Digital Financial Services Ahsan Ullah Chowdhury and Head of Digital Payments Faisal M Fateh-ul Islam were also present.
