A Dhaka court has placed two personal staff of Tarique Ahmed Siddique, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s military adviser, on a four-day remand in a case filed over the killing of a businessman during the July uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Al Biruni Mir passed the order on Friday, allowing further interrogation of driver Md Chan Mia and caretaker Md Mahidul Islam in connection with the murder of Abdul Wadud near New Market.

Police had earlier arrested Mahidul from Islambag in Thakurgaon Sadar on 19 April, while Chan Mia was detained from the Bhasantek area in Dhaka. Both were initially placed on a four-day remand on 20 April.

After completion of that remand period, investigators produced them before the court and sought a further seven-day remand for additional questioning. The application was submitted by Inspector Md Amzad Hossain Talukder of the Detective Branch’s Ramna zone.

During the hearing, prosecutors argued in favour of the remand extension, while defence lawyers opposed the plea and sought bail.

After hearing both sides, the court approved a four-day remand.

According to the case details, businessman Abdul Wadud was shot dead on 19 July, 2024, during protests in the Nilkhet area of New Market.

Following the incident, his brother-in-law Abdur Rob filed a murder case with New Market Police Station, naming 130 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former minister Obaidul Quader, as accused.
