Bangladeshi rock icon Bassbaba Sumon is set to return to cinema soundtracks with the upcoming film ‘Andhar’, marking a rare expansion of his involvement in film music beyond his usual selective contributions.
Known for being highly particular about lending his voice to films, Sumon previously allowed his track ‘Chaitei Paro’ to be used in the Eid release ‘Bonolota Express’, a decision he attributed to his appreciation of director Tanim Noor. The collaboration has since renewed attention on the song, which has seen a resurgence in popularity following the film’s release.
In Andhar, directed by Raihan Rafi, Sumon will contribute both an older track and a newly recorded song performed in his voice. While he has kept details under wraps, he confirmed that more information will be shared closer to the film’s release.
Beyond playback work, Sumon is also creatively involved in the project’s story development. He co-wrote the screenplay alongside Shakib Chowdhury of Cryptic Fate and Adnan Adib Khan. Describing Andhar as a genre-blending film that combines horror, action, thriller and light comedic elements, Sumon believes this type of cinema is uncommon in Bangladeshi entertainment sphere.
The film features a large ensemble cast including Siam Ahmed, Nazifa Tushi, Chanchal Chowdhury, Afsana Mimi, Gazi Rakayet and Mostafa Monwar. Filming has already been completed, with a planned theatrical release expected around the end of the year, the film’s producer Shakib Chowdhury informed TIMES.
Reflecting on his recent musical contribution to Bonolota Express, Sumon said he was pleased by the audience response, noting that the song continues to gain popularity both locally and abroad.
The musician further admitted that while he rarely works on film soundtracks, strong storytelling and familiarity with a director’s work were key reasons he agreed to participate.
