Israel has issued an urgent travel alert for train users in Iran, as Donald Trump escalates threats of further strikes on the country’s infrastructure.
In a post written in Farsi on Tuesday morning, the Israel Defense Forces warned of potential imminent air raids targeting Iran’s rail network. The military described it as an “urgent warning to train users and passengers in Iran”, reports BBC.
However, the warning is unlikely to reach most people on the ground due to a weeks-long internet blackout across Iran, severely limiting access to social media platforms.
Iran’s rail system spans the country extensively, and many passengers are expected to have already been travelling on Tuesday morning, covering long distances or located near railway stations and tracks.
The alert follows a series of overnight Israeli airstrikes across Iran, with targets described as “regime infrastructure”.
Meanwhile, Trump has threatened to obliterate Iranian civilian infrastructure unless Tehran fully reopens the Strait of Hormuz by Tuesday a move widely viewed as a potential threat to commit war crimes.
The US president has brushed aside questions regarding war crimes and claimed without evidence that Iranian citizens want the US to “keep bombing”.
The UN has warned that ongoing airstrikes have already resulted in a high number of civilian casualties, alongside widespread destruction of homes, schools and healthcare facilities. It added that attacks on critical infrastructure have severely disrupted essential services across the country.
