20 May set for indictment hearing against Salam Murshedy, others

A Dhaka court has scheduled 20 May for the charge framing hearing in a case concerning the alleged misappropriation of 27 kathas of government land in the Gulshan-2 area. The case involves former MP Abdus Salam Murshedy and 12 other individuals.

The hearing, initially set for Sunday, took place at Dhaka Special Judge Court-9, presided over by Judge Md Abdus Salam. Salam Murshedy, along with other accused individuals in custody, was presented before the court, while those on bail appeared in person.

Defence lawyer for Salam Murshedy, Ehsanul Haque Samaji, sought discharge from the case and also filed a bail petition. After the hearing, the court rejected the bail plea and set 20 May for the charge framing hearing for all the accused.

After hearing, the court rejected the bail request and set the charge framing hearing for 20 May.

Public Prosecutor Khondkar Shameem Hossain of the concerned court confirmed the development.

According to the charge sheet, other accused in the case include former RAJUK Chairman Humayun Khadem, Engineer M Azizul Haque, former Member (Estate) Lt Colonel (Retd) M Nurul Haque, former Director Abdur Rahman Bhuiyan, former Deputy Director (Estate) Md Azharul Islam, former Supervisor Md Habib Ullah, former Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works Abdus Sobhan, former Branch Assistant Md Mahbubul Haque, and Ramu residents of Cox’s Bazar, Mir Mohammad Hasan and his brother Mir Md Nurul Afser.

The charge sheet of the case states that the accused, in conspiracy with each other, abused their positions as public servants and, with dishonest intent, created false records through forgery, despite the property being listed as 27 katha of abandoned government land under the Housing and Public Works Ministry’s gazette.

They later made way for the illegal transfer of the property and its possession. The case was filed under Sections 420, 467, 468, 471, and 109 of the Penal Code and Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947.

Earlier, on 1 October 2024, Salam Murshedy was arrested, and he has been in jail since then.
