A heated exchange took place in the National Parliament on Thursday between opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed over accusations of presenting untruths.
After the question-answer session, opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman took the floor and alleged that the home minister had made a statement about him after the opposition walked out on Wednesday.
“The biggest problem is that after we left parliament yesterday, the home minister, out of love for me, made a statement. He said that I had spoken an untruth,” Shafiqur said.
Addressing the speaker, he added, “In fact, Allah has given him an extraordinary skill. Just by changing the bottle while keeping the material the same, he can admirably present truth as falsehood and falsehood as truth. I have stood up to thank him for this.”
The speaker intervened, noting that the matter was from the previous day and did not need to be raised again.
However, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed countered, objecting to the opposition leader’s choice of words.
“At this moment, the opposition leader has used two unparliamentary words. That word is ‘falsehood.’ If he had said ‘untrue,’ I would not have objected. I request that this be expunged,” the home minister said.
Salahuddin further clarified his earlier remarks, stating that he had said the opposition leader presented an untruthful statement under Rule 62.
“An adjournment motion from a private member was accepted long after the opposition leaders had walked out. It would have been impossible for it to be read or raised earlier. That is why I said that his statement on Wednesday was untruthful,” he added.
In response, Shafiqur Rahman again stood up and said, “The confusion is here. The same motion was brought by an independent member, which came under a different name yesterday. The subject matter was the same, only the name changed.”
“Because I knew about the previous one, I said what I said. I did not provide any false information,” the opposition leader asserted.
