Bangladesh stands at a critical juncture in its journey toward sustainable development, as global pressure intensifies to cut carbon emissions and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Renewable energy has emerged as a cornerstone of economic resilience and environmental protection, and for a maritime nation like Bangladesh, the transition must begin at its ports.
Ports are among the most energy-intensive infrastructures, consuming large amounts of power for container handling, refrigeration, lighting, and administrative operations.
Ships also rely on auxiliary diesel engines while docked, contributing to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in port cities.
Globally, renewable energy is becoming central to sustainable development strategies, driven by concerns over climate change, pollution, and fossil fuel dependency.
Technologies such as solar, wind, biomass, tidal, and hydrogen energy are increasingly seen as essential tools for reducing emissions and improving energy security.
Forward-looking ports are already adopting these solutions, with solar systems powering terminals, offshore wind supporting electricity generation, and shore power allowing ships to use cleaner electricity instead of diesel.
These developments are transforming traditional ports into environmentally responsible green ports.
Bangladesh’s major seaports—Chattogram, Mongla, and Payra—handle more than 90 per cent of international trade, yet remain heavily dependent on fossil fuels.
Integrating renewable energy into port operations is now a necessity rather than a choice.
The benefits include lower long-term operational costs, improved efficiency, and reduced emissions.
This shift also supports Bangladesh’s blue economy ambitions, which aim to use ocean resources sustainably for economic growth and environmental protection.
Global investment in renewable energy has grown rapidly, reaching about $366 billion in 2019, while modern renewables accounted for around 12.6 per cent of total final energy consumption.
The International Energy Agency projects that global renewable electricity capacity will exceed 4,500 gigawatts within the current decade.
International organisations such as the International Renewable Energy Agency and the International Energy Agency continue to provide technical and policy support to accelerate renewable energy adoption.
The United Nations Sustainable Energy for All initiative also aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy by 2030.
Despite progress, challenges remain, including high initial costs, limited technical capacity, and fragmented policy frameworks.
Overcoming these barriers will require strong government leadership, supportive regulations, and active private sector participation.
Public-private partnerships, international cooperation, and technology transfer will be essential to accelerate the transition.
Global commitments, including outcomes from the 2023 climate conference, underline the urgency of expanding renewable energy capacity.
Bangladesh has an opportunity to position its ports as regional leaders in sustainability by integrating clean energy solutions.
The path forward is clear, as clean energy represents not only an environmental necessity but also an economic opportunity.
By investing in green port development, Bangladesh can build a more sustainable, resilient, and competitive maritime sector.
