The beloved sitcom ‘How I Met Your Mother’ drew heavily from the real lives of its creators, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. The duo, who met at Wesleyan University, pitched the series to 20th Century Fox by mining experiences from their post-college years in New York and their time writing for ‘The Late Show With David Letterman’.
Bays has admitted that his own dating struggles and Thomas’ brief split from his college girlfriend inspired key storylines. Alyson Hannigan, who plays Lily, was personally suggested by Thomas’ wife, Rebecca Alson-Milkman, while other roles went through near misses.
Jason Biggs and Scott Foley were considered for Ted Mosby before Josh Radnor secured the lead. Jennifer Love Hewitt almost played Robin Scherbatsky, but Cobie Smulders ultimately stepped into the role.
Neil Patrick Harris’ portrayal of Barney Stinson became iconic after an unconventional audition involving shoulder rolls and dive rolls convinced the creators he was the perfect fit. Jason Segel was the first choice for Marshall Eriksen due to his stature and comedic timing.
The series’ characters, bars, and routines were influenced by the creators’ own lives. McLaren’s, the gang’s favourite pub, is based on a Midtown bar they frequented, while elements like the slap bets were drawn from Bays’ school days. The show’s theme song, Hey Beautiful, was written by Bays and Thomas’ band The Solids, with contributions from Radnor in music selection.
Guest stars also shaped the series’ success. Britney Spears’ appearance in season three boosted ratings and established the show as a cultural phenomenon. Subsequent celebrity cameos included Katy Perry, Jennifer Lopez, Mandy Moore, Enrique Iglesias, and Bryan Cranston.
The cast often participated in group table reads to mirror the camaraderie of their on-screen friendships.
