Theatre group Actomania has brought Brazilian author Paulo Coelho’s timeless novel The Alchemist to the stage with its new production The Alchemist: Subornosroshta. The production marks the group’s fourth theatrical work.
Three performances of the play were held over the past two days at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Segunbagicha, Dhaka.
Mahfuz Islam Megh adapted the novel for the stage, while Actomania chief Talha Zubayer handled the stage design and direction.
Explaining the production, Talha said Coelho’s message about spirituality, nature and humanity’s connection with the laws of the universe offers mental peace and philosophical reflection at a time when materialism and capitalism dominate society.
“The Alchemist is not simply a story about reaching a destination. It is a story of the experience of the journey and spiritual transformation. I believe this inner transformation is particularly important in today’s uncertain and restless times,” he said.
The story follows Santiago, a young shepherd from Andalusia, who sets out in search of a treasure he dreams is buried near the pyramids of Egypt. Along the way, he encounters a series of people, each of whom offers him new insights into life and his own desires.
A Gypsy woman, Melchizedek, the King of Salem, a crystal merchant, an Englishman, a caravan leader and Fatima of the oasis each become important chapters in Santiago’s journey. Eventually, his encounter with the mysterious Alchemist reveals another truth about life.
As part of its exploration of classical world theatre, Actomania has combined physical action with contemporary theatrical techniques in the production.
