President Mohammed Shahabuddin, along with his spouse Rebeka Sultana, will host a grand reception at Bangabhaban on Thursday to mark the 56th Independence and National Day.

A presidential spokesperson said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to attend the function on the green lawns of the presidential palace in the afternoon.

Over 15,000 guests have been invited, including cabinet members, political leaders, ambassadors and high commissioners, Supreme Court judges, chiefs of the three services, members of parliament, academics, business leaders, artistes, valiant freedom fighters, and families of Birshreshtha award recipients, the spokesperson added.

March 26 serves as a solemn reminder of Bangladesh’s darkest hours. The day marks the beginning of the nine-month Liberation War, following the tragic events of March 25, 1971, which ultimately led to independence on December 16 at a heavy human cost.

During the reception, the President and Prime Minister will cut a ceremonial cake and exchange greetings with wounded freedom fighters and other dignitaries.

A cultural programme will follow, accompanied by light refreshments.
