Prime Minister Tarique Rahman paid tribute at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar on Wednesday morning.
He offered floral tributes at the memorial around 11am and stood in silence for a few moments.
After paying tribute as the prime minister, he along with members of the newly formed cabinet laid wreaths at the altar of the memorial.
After paying tribute as the prime minister, he signed the visitors’ book at the memorial. He signed as the country’s 11th Prime Minister. Following tradition, Tarique Rahman also planted a tree on the premises of the memorial.
Ahead of their visit, various preparations were made at the National Memorial premises. Since last Sunday, public entry has been restricted to ensure beautification and security.
In addition, extra law enforcement personnel were deployed around the area.
The new PM and cabinet members will also lay wreaths and offer respects at the mausoleums of former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, according to a press release from the Prime Minister’s Office.
Earlier on Tuesday, following the swearing-in ceremony that formalized the formation of the new government, Tarique Rahman became Bangladesh’s eleventh prime minister.
On his first day in office Wednesday, he is scheduled to work at the Secretariat, where he will attend a luncheon and later preside over a cabinet meeting in the afternoon.
This will be the first cabinet meeting since the new government took office. Afterwards, the prime minister will hold discussions with secretaries. He may issue necessary directives to the secretaries during his first working day at the Secretariat.
The BNP won an absolute majority in the 13th parliamentary election held on February 12. On Tuesday, the BNP formed a new government with Tarique Rahman as prime minister. Members of the new cabinet took oath before President Mohammed Shahabuddin at the Jatiya Sangsad South Plaza.
