At least 12 passengers were killed when a bus was hit by a train at the Padua Bazar rail crossing in Cumilla early Sunday.

The victims included seven men, three women, and two children. Officials warned the death toll could rise.

Train services between Dhaka and Chattogram were suspended following the incident.

Highway police said a Mamun Paribahan bus traveling from Chapainawabganj to Lakshmipur collided with the Dhaka-bound Chattogram Mail train while crossing the tracks around 3am.

Police, army personnel and fire service teams rushed to the scene to begin rescue operations.
