Former Chandpur-3 lawmaker and BNP executive committee member GM Fazlul Haque died at a private hospital in Dhaka on Tuesday evening.
Family members said he was 83 and had been suffering from age-related illnesses for a long period, receiving treatment at home and abroad.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters, and extended family members, with the family residing in Dhaka.
His eldest son Barrister Ziaul Haque Ziku confirmed the death.
GM Fazlul Haque hailed from Gazi Bari in Tarpurchandi village under Tarpurchandi union in Chandpur Sadar.
His janaza will be held at his village home, followed by burial at the family graveyard.
He was elected as a Member of Parliament from Chandpur-3 in the 7th National Parliament in 1996 and again in the 8th National Parliament in 2001 as a BNP candidate.
He also contested the 9th parliamentary election in 2008 from the same constituency but lost to Awami League candidate Dr Dipu Moni.
During his tenure, he served as Acting Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad and chaired the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Posts and Telecommunications.
Chandpur-3 lawmaker Sheikh Farid Ahmed Manik and BNP leaders expressed condolences, while leaders from other political parties and professional organisations also paid tribute.
