Professor ABM Obaidul Islam, the current Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University (BOU) and a professor in the Department of Physics at Dhaka University, has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor of Dhaka University (DU).
He took over the charge on Tuesday from the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan.
The appointment was made on Monday by the President and Chancellor of the university, in accordance with Article 11 (2) of the Dhaka University Order, 1973.
The handover ceremony was attended by University Treasurer Professor M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, alongside high-ranking officials from various universities, faculty deans, hall provosts, departmental chairmen, institute directors, and other members of the teaching and administrative staff.
In a brief address following the assumption of his duties, the new Vice-Chancellor stated that his primary focus would be to improve Dhaka University’s position in international rankings and enhance its global recognition. He sought the cooperation of all stakeholders to ensure a conducive environment for education and research, as well as a student-friendly campus.
Professor Islam further noted that the university would progress through planned initiatives and coordinated efforts, emphasizing that the development activities initiated by the previous Vice-Chancellor would be maintained.
The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor also requested all concerned to refrain from greeting him with flowers, sweets, or any other gifts.
