LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for merit-based selection in all fields, firmly stating that there should be no tolerance for influence peddling.
Speaking at an Iftar and prayer gathering organised by the Thakurgaon District Association at the Krishibid Institute in Dhaka on Friday evening, Fakhrul, also the BNP Secretary General, emphasised that the country’s growth and progress depend on prioritising merit in public services and other sectors.
He criticised the widespread reliance on personal connections and influence, advocating for a system that fosters fairness and transparency.
Fakhrul also addressed economic challenges, especially for the underprivileged. He proposed providing loans ranging from Tk 10 to 20 lakh to help the poor become self-sufficient.
“This will give them the opportunity to establish their own livelihoods and become independent,” he said.
Turning to the job market, Fakhrul described it as “impossible” for many young people to navigate.
He urged collective action to create self-employment opportunities for youth, stressing that the entire society must come together to support this cause.
During his speech, Fakhrul also made several commitments for his home district of Thakurgaon, including plans to build a university and a four-lane highway to boost the region’s infrastructure and development.
