A man was stabbed to death in Cox’s Bazar town on Saturday allegedly for refusing to pay extortion money.
The incident took place around noon in the Pollan Kata area near a BGB camp in the town.
The deceased was identified as Ganesh Pal, 40, son of Bishwanath Pal and a resident of the same area.
Ganesh Pal’s wife Nepali Pal told journalists that construction of a septic tank was underway at their house. She said a man named Zidan went to Ganesh Pal’s shop on Friday night and demanded extortion money. When he refused to pay, Zidan and an accomplice allegedly came to their house on Saturday noon and attacked him.
Nepali Pal said Zidan and his accomplice stabbed Ganesh Pal in the chest in front of her. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
The accused Zidan lives in the Pollan Kata area near the BGB camp and is the son of mason Zakir Hossain.
Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Sami Uddin said the stabbing occurred following a dispute over a demand for money during the construction of the septic tank.
He said legal action is being taken against those involved.
Meanwhile, Cox’s Bazar District Puja Udjapan Parishad President and former municipal councillor Uday Shankar Pal Mithu said if those involved in such killings are not dealt with strictly, the situation may worsen in the future.
He urged the Home Ministry, district administration and police to ensure the security of the Sanatan community.
