The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) conducted a market monitoring drive at Iterpul Market in Madaripur town on Tuesday morning, with the local Member of Parliament (MP) in attendance.
The operation was initiated following reports that prices of essential commodities had been increased in various markets across the district during the month of Ramadan.
Jahandar Ali Miah, the MP for Madaripur-2, accompanied the team as they inspected grocery, vegetable, fish, and meat shops.
During the visit, traders were warned that legal action would be taken if they did not adhere to government-fixed prices. Additionally, the MP directed mobile shops occupying the pavements to vacate their positions within 24 hours.
The drive was attended by DNCRP Assistant Director Suchandan Mondal, Bangladesh Food Safety Authority District Officer Rafiqul Islam, and Agricultural Marketing Officer Rubel Mia, among others.
Speaking on the occasion, MP Jahandar Ali Miah observed that while businesses in other countries often lower prices during Ramadan, the opposite trend is frequently seen in Bangladesh.
He stated that the government is maintaining a strict position against dishonest traders who hold consumers hostage, and relevant departments, including the district administration, have been instructed to continue taking legal action against such practices.
