The government has appointed administrators to six city corporations, including Dhaka North and Dhaka South. All six appointees are BNP leaders. Among them, two contested the 13th parliamentary election but lost, while three sought party nominations that were denied.

The Local Government Division issued a notification in this regard on Sunday.

According to the notification, Abdus Salam has been appointed administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation. He is a member of the BNP chairperson’s advisory council and was serving as convener of Dhaka South unit of BNP.

Salam also worked as the chief election coordinator for Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman in Dhaka-17 during the 13th parliamentary election.

On the other hand, Md Shafiqul Islam Khan has been appointed administrator of DNCC. He contested the last election for Dhaka-15 with the “sheaf of paddy” symbol but lost to Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Shafiqur Rahman.

Nazrul Islam Monju, BNP’s central organising secretary, has been named administrator of Khulna City Corporation. He contested in Khulna-2 during the election but was defeated by a Jamaat candidate, though he had previously been elected MP three times from the constituency.

Abdul Quayum Chowdhury, president of Sylhet unit of BNP, has been appointed administrator of Sylhet City Corporation. Though he sought nomination for Sylhet-3, he was instead assigned as BNP’s election coordinator for all six constituencies in Sylhet district.

Md Sakhawat Hossain Khan, convener of Narayanganj BNP, has been appointed as Narayanganj City Corporation administrator. He participated in the election of the 2016 city corporation mayoral post with the BNP symbol but lost. He also sought nomination in Narayanganj-5 in the recent national election but was denied.

In addition, Md Shawkat Hossain Sarkar, president of Gazipur BNP, has been assigned as administrator of Gazipur City Corporation. He was a nominated in Gazipur-2 during the 12 February election.

The notification states that, under Section 25(ka), sub-section (1) of the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024, the persons have been appointed as full-time administrators until new corporations are formed or further orders are issued.

It added that the administrators will exercise the powers and responsibilities of the mayor under sub-section (3) of Section 25(ka) of the Ordinance and will receive allowances as per rules.
