Newly appointed Health Minister Sardar Sakhawat Hossain Bokul on Wednesday outlined his priorities to ensure quality healthcare reaches rural communities and to establish a transparent, corruption- and syndicate-free Health and Family Welfare Ministry.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat after taking office, the minister said the government aims to provide advanced medical services locally, reducing the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.
“Our goal is to extend healthcare benefits to the grassroots, down to the village level,” he said.
On the trend of seeking medical treatment overseas, he noted it is often due to the lack of appropriate facilities in the country rather than public distrust. He emphasised that improving domestic healthcare standards is essential to encourage citizens to receive treatment at home.
Regarding corruption and syndicates within the ministry, the minister vowed strict action. “There will be no tolerance for corruption, nepotism, or syndicates. Any attempts to influence the ministry improperly will be firmly addressed,” he said, calling for media support in ensuring accountability.
Highlighting rural healthcare challenges, he pointed to doctor shortages and reluctance to accept postings. Measures will include surprise hospital inspections, monitoring doctors’ attendance, and assessing service quality. Staffing shortages will be reviewed, and necessary actions will be coordinated with the Prime Minister.
Reflecting on his new role, he said personal satisfaction will come from achieving tangible results. “The day I can satisfy the people of this country, that will be my peace,” he said.
He expressed confidence that, following the Prime Minister’s guidance, the Health and Family Welfare Ministry can be transformed into an effective, transparent, and citizen-focused institution.
