National Citizen Party (NCP) convener and member of parliament Nahid Islam has alleged that if former adviser Khalilur Rahman joins the BNP government, serious questions will arise about his role during his time in the interim government, stating that it would prove that Khalilur Rahman had been working in favour of a specific political party all along.

He made these comments while speaking with journalists on Tuesday afternoon.

Nahid Islam further alleged that there was planned rigging in the recent election. He claimed that through manipulation of results, many seats were lost from their party, and the ruling party strategically took two-thirds of the seats.

“This entire incident has been engineered. Khalilur Rahman joining the cabinet has revealed this today before the nation today,” he said.

Nahid Islam strongly criticised the ruling party’s decision not to take oath for the Constitution Reform Council. He said this is tantamount to showing disrespect to the referendum verdict and breaks several promises.

“The question in everyone’s mind is, what can the country and nation expect from those who broke promises on the very first day of forming the government?” he said.

The NCP convener noted that this is not just a breach of political promises but has also created a legal and constitutional crisis.

According to Nahid Islam, the referendum order issued based on the July Charter clearly stated that if the verdict favored “Yes” in the referendum, the elected Members of Parliament would take oath as members of the Reform Council on the same occasion.

“The legitimacy of the referendum came from that order itself. We all participated in the election and referendum accepting that order. The explanation they are giving now is not acceptable,” he added.

Nahid Islam urged that the ruling party quickly resolve this crisis by taking oath for the Reform Council and fulfill the promise of reform made to the people.
