Police have arrested Sharif Uddin Dulal, the alleged mastermind behind a bomb explosion in Chapainawabganj’s Charbagdanga Fata Para area that left two people dead while bombs were being manufactured.
He was detained in Rajshahi. Sharif Uddin Dulal is the son of the late Maqbul Hossain of Fata Para village in Charbagdanga Union under Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila.
According to police, Dulal took several individuals to his brother Kalam’s house to make bombs. At one stage, an explosion occurred during the process, after which he fled the area.
Dulal had served as a vice-president of Chapainawabganj district unit of Jubo League. However, ahead of the recent parliamentary election, he formally joined Jamaat.
He was arrested at around 12:30am on Sunday night in front of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Additional Superintendent of Police NNM Wasim Firoz confirmed Dulal’s arrest to the media on Monday afternoon.
Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station Nure Alam said Dulal was arrested after his name emerged during the investigation of the case.
According to police and local sources, Dulal had been preparing to attack a rival group over local dominance. As part of the plan, crude bombs were being manufactured at his brother Kalam’s house.
Several local individuals, along with others from neighbouring areas, were reportedly hired as bomb makers.
On condition of anonymity, local residents said the bomb-making began late on Friday night at Kalam’s house. At around 5:15am, a powerful explosion occurred during the process, destroying the tin roof and walls of the house. Two bomb makers, Al Amin and Jihad, were killed on the spot.
Three others — Bazlur Rahman, Minhaj and Shuvo — were seriously injured and initially taken to Chapainawabganj District Hospital before being transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
They are currently undergoing treatment there under police custody.
