BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has decided to relinquish his Bogura-6 seat after emerging victorious in two constituencies in the 13th parliamentary elections, according to a letter submitted to the Election Commission (EC).
Senior Secretary of the EC Akhtar Ahmed confirmed on Monday that the commission has received the letter.
“We have received the notification from Tarique Rahman, but the seat has not yet been officially declared vacant through a gazette. The gazette process is currently underway,” he said.
In his home constituency, Bogura-6, Tarique Rahman won all 150 polling centres, securing 2,16,284 votes. His nearest rival, Jamaat candidate Abidur Rahman, received 97,626 votes.
In Dhaka-17, he obtained 72,699 votes, narrowly defeating SM Khaliduzzaman, who received 68,300 votes, a margin of fewer than 5,000 votes.
Under Article 71 of the Constitution, a person cannot represent more than one constituency simultaneously.
Elected individuals must notify the EC within 30 days which seat they will retain.
If no decision is made within the stipulated period, the additional seat is declared vacant, and the member cannot take the oath for that seat until a choice is made.
This move ensures compliance with constitutional provisions and paves the way for a by-election in Bogura-6.
