Members of the UK chapter of Bangladesh’s Awami League staged a protest outside the Houses of Parliament against Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus during his official visit to the United Kingdom. The demonstration saw participation from several prominent leaders of the ousted Awami League government, including former minister Abdur Rahman, ex-state minister for shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, former Sylhet mayor Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, and former MPs Habibur Rahman, Abu Zahir, Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, and Ranjit Sarkar.

The protesters held banners and placards featuring Yunus’ image while chanting slogans. It should be noted that all participating leaders currently face legal cases in Bangladesh following the government’s overthrow during the July uprising.

During his four-day visit, the chief adviser has already held meetings with several high-profile figures, including the UK’s minister for trade, national security adviser, representatives of the All-Party Parliamentary Group, Commonwealth secretary-general, and an Airbus executive vice president.

A crucial meeting between Yunus and BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman is scheduled for Friday, which BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has termed a potential “turning point” in the current political context.

The chief adviser is expected to return to Bangladesh on June 14.
