Serena Williams can return to competitive tennis from Sunday, 22 February, after the ITIA reinstated her eligibility, but the sport still waits to learn if, when, or where the American icon will play again.

The ITIA placed Williams on its reinstatements list this week, clearing her to enter tournaments once she met the testing criteria. She quietly rejoined the out-of-competition drug testing pool in December, the key administrative step for any comeback.

That technical green light does not equal intent. Williams walked away at the 2022 US Open and has never announced a return, preferring ambiguity to declarations.

She poured cold water on speculation earlier this winter, posting on social media: “I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy.” The wording sounded final, but Williams rarely closes doors.

Weeks later, she reopened one herself. Speaking on the Today Show, she said: “I don’t know, I’m just going to see what happens.” That uncertainty keeps tournament directors and fans guessing.

When Savannah Guthrie pressed her, Williams pushed back. “It’s not a maybe,” she said, a response that clarified nothing and maintained her grip on the narrative.

Asked directly about the testing pool, Williams deflected. “I don’t know if I was out. Listen, I can’t discuss this.” She finished with a line that summed up her mood: “If I want to put it to bed… listen, I want to go to bed.”

Williams has always disliked the word retirement. She described her exit as “evolving away” from tennis, language that suggested pause rather than closure.

The numbers still loom over the debate. She owns 23 Grand Slam singles titles, more than any player in the Open era, and only Margaret Court and Novak Djokovic sit above her in history.

At 44, she would not chase records but relevance, measuring herself against a faster, younger tour. Her sister Venus still plays on, a living reminder that longevity remains possible, if not easy.
