Islami Chhatra Andolon Bangladesh has condemned and protested against derogatory remarks made by A Jamaat-Islami leader about Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu).
Mohammad Ali, acting president of the DU unit of Islami Chhatra Andolon, and its General Secretary Saif Mohammad Alauddin issued a joint statement on Sunday.
In the statement, they described the comments made by Md Shamim Ahsan, assistant secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Barguna district unit, about DU and Ducsu as irresponsible, indecent, and false.
The statement said that Dhaka University is a beacon of knowledge, thought, and struggle in the country. Making derogatory remarks against the university by calling it a “den of drugs and a brothel” is a direct attack on women’s dignity, the sanctity of educational institutions, and the fundamental values of civilised society. It is an insult to one of the country’s renowned educational structures and an attempt to demean the institution.
The leaders said that defaming and dishonouring female students of DU will not be tolerated in any way. Those who speak of Islam, morality, and decency while dishonouring women have no moral right to use the name of Islam.
They further said that Jamaat leader Shamim must apologise publicly and withdraw his remarks. Otherwise, Ducsu, the university administration, and the state authorities must take exemplary action against such hateful comments.
Leaders of Islami Chhatra Andolon said they have observed that a Jamaat-Shibir-backed group, instead of expressing remorse in the face of protests, used even more vile, obscene, and insulting language directed at female students during a protest rally at Dhaka University’s TSC. This proves that the remarks were not isolated but rather an expression of a distorted mindset and a misogynistic political culture.
