The High Court has suspended the Sucsu and hall council elections of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) for four weeks, halting the polls originally scheduled to begin tomorrow, Tuesday, at 9am.
This election was the first in 28 years to be held under the current system.
The order came on Monday from a bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md Asif Hasan.
The suspension follows a writ petition filed on Sunday by independent Sucsu candidate Mominur Rashid Shuvo.
The petition argued that with the national parliamentary elections approaching, the Election Commission has directed suspension of all types of elections.
Conducting the Sucsu and hall council elections under such circumstances would be unlawful, the writ claimed.
Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal, Barrister Rashna Imam, and Barrister Moniruzzaman Asad represented the petitioner in court. Advocate Mohammad Hossain Lipu appeared for SUST, while Additional Attorney General Aneek R Haque represented the state.
The High Court bench issued the order following a preliminary hearing of the writ.
All election activities at SUST are now on hold for the four-week period, until further directives.
