Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed said the country’s economy is no longer in a fragile condition, noting that the foreign exchange reserves have increased from $18 billion to $32 billion.
The Advisor made these remarks while answering questions from journalists after inaugurating a referendum campaign, voter motivation programme, and “vote car” promotion at the Hasan Ali Government High School field in Chandpur.
He noted that within the one-and-a-half-year tenure of the interim government, the economic condition of the country has successfully shifted from the “ICU to a cabin“.
Ahmed explained that the economy had previously been pushed to the brink of collapse due to widespread corruption and money laundering. He asserted that the current administration has managed to pull the economy back from the edge of that precipice within just eighteen months.
Regarding necessary state changes, the Advisor emphasised that any government must undertake reforms for judicial independence, the implementation of speedy trials, and the maintenance of law and order.
He said the public is being urged to vote ‘Yes’ in the referendum to ensure the implementation of those reforms.
Responding to a question on concerns over voting, the finance adviser said there is no reason for doubt.
“Why would voting not take place? There is no political pressure now. No particular party will be able to come to power using money,” he said.
He said a free and fair vote would be possible if all concerned cooperated.
