Chattogram Port posts rising revenue surplus

The Chattogram Port Authority has recorded strong growth in revenue income and revenue surplus over the past five years, reflecting tighter cost control and improved financial management.

According to Chattogram Port Authority data, revenue income grew at an average annual rate of 13.08 per cent between 2021 and 2025, while average revenue surplus rose faster at 18.42 per cent over the same period. Officials said the gains were driven by curbing unnecessary expenditure without compromising service delivery.

An analysis of income and expenditure shows revenue expenditure growth was held to an average of 7.59 per cent during the five-year period, strengthening the port authority’s financial position.

The strongest performance came in 2025, when revenue income reached Tk5460.18 crore and expenditure stood at Tk2317.50 crore, resulting in a record surplus of Tk3142.68 crore, the highest in five years, the authority said in a press release issued on Friday, 16 January.

In 2024, revenue income amounted to Tk5076.75 crore against expenditure of Tk2153.58 crore, generating a surplus of Tk2923.17 crore. Earlier surpluses were Tk2143.11 crore in 2023, Tk1734.20 crore in 2022 and Tk1633.26 crore in 2021.

In year-on-year terms, 2024 was the strongest year for revenue growth, with income rising by 21.88 per cent. Revenue grew by 7.55 per cent in 2025, 16.69 per cent in 2023 and 6.18 per cent in 2022.

On the cost side, expenditure growth remained in single digits in the past two years. Chattogram Port Authority Director Administration Md Omar Faruk said expenditure growth was 7.61 per cent in 2025 and 6.50 per cent in 2024, after rising to 10.18 per cent in 2023 and 6.17 per cent in 2022.

As an organisation under the Ministry of Shipping, the port authority has continued to make a large contribution to the national exchequer. Over the past five calendar years, it deposited Tk7580.20 crore as tax, value-added tax and non-tax revenue.

Of the total, Tk3553.08 crore was paid as tax, Tk3427.12 crore as VAT and Tk600 crore as non-tax revenue.

Treasury payments have also increased steadily. In 2025, deposits to the national treasury reached Tk1804.47 crore, up 5.41 per cent from the previous year. Deposits were Tk1711.75 crore in 2024, Tk1519.35 crore in 2023, Tk1359.59 crore in 2022 and Tk1185.04 crore in 2021.

Port officials said disciplined spending, stable service quality and improved efficiency in revenue management have supported the authority’s sustained financial performance.
