Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director M Nazmul Islam has failed to respond to the show-cause notice issued over his controversial remarks about players’ finances, even after the 48-hour deadline lapsed.
Attempts to reach Nazmul throughout Thursday were unsuccessful. Later that evening, BCB director Iftekhar Rahman Mithu confirmed that no reply had been received. The board stated that, according to its regulations, failure to respond within the allotted timeframe would lead to further disciplinary action. Mithu explained, “He has been removed from his committee (Finance Committee Chairman). We operate under the constitution, and the procedure requires a show-cause notice. The 48-hour period, which ended at noon on 17 January, was the window to submit a response.”
As of Saturday afternoon, the BCB has still not received any explanation from Nazmul regarding his remarks on players’ finances. Sources suggest that the next steps will be determined in consultation with BCB president Aminul Islam Bulbul.
The controversy began on 14 January, when Nazmul was asked whether players would receive compensation if Bangladesh did not participate in the upcoming T20 World Cup. He replied, “The board will not pay; the players will suffer. Players receive match fees and performance-based payments, not the board. At least for this World Cup, if they achieve nothing after we spend so much, should we ask for that money back?”
His comments prompted the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) to demand his resignation and announce a boycott of all cricket, including the BPL. As a result, two BPL matches scheduled the following day were suspended, and the BCB initially announced an indefinite postponement of the league. After discussions between the BCB and CWAB, players agreed to return under certain conditions, and Nazmul was subsequently issued the show-cause notice.
