Former Dhaka‑7 MP Mostofa Jalal Mohiuddin was shown arrested in a case filed over the murder of Mahfuz Alam Shrabon during the July uprising last year.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ariful Islam passed the order on Wednesday.

Mostofa, also a presidium member of the Awami League (whose activities are currently banned), was arrested by the Detective Branch of police from Dhaka’s Mohammadpur on 20 January. Since then, he has been in custody in connection with multiple cases.

Mirpur Police Station’s Inspector Md Mizanur Rahman, also the investigation officer of the case, filed the application to show the accused arrested, said Morshed Hossain Shahin, the former lawmaker’s lawyer.

Shahin said Mostofa is a freedom fighter and 80 years old. “Bringing him in handcuffs today is entirely inhumane. It disregards orders of the higher court. He has repeatedly been shown arrested in various murder cases without justification,” the lawyer added.

According to the case, Mahfuz Alam Shrabon, an employee of Renata Pharmaceutical Company, took part in the anti‑discrimination student movement on 5 August 2024.

Around 2:30pm that day, Shrabon was attacked on the road between Mirpur Shopping Complex and Mirpur Model Police Station. He was shot in the left side of his chest. Shrabon was taken to a hospital in Mirpur, where doctors declared him dead.
