About 54 percent of Bangladeshi families living in the United States receive government assistance, according to figures shared by US President Donald Trump.
Trump disclosed the data in a post on his social media platform Truth Social on 4 January, presenting statistics on foreign-born immigrant households in the US that depend on various forms of government support.
The assistance includes programmes related to food security, healthcare and housing.
The data covered immigrant families from 120 countries and regions. Notably, all South Asian countries were included in the list except India, although no explanation was provided for India’s exclusion.
According to the figures, Bhutanese immigrant families topped the list, with 81.4 percent receiving government assistance. They were followed by Yemeni families at 75.2 percent and Somali families at 71.9 percent.
Among South Asian nations, Afghan immigrant families recorded a relatively high rate at 68.1 percent.
Bangladesh followed with 54 percent, while Pakistan stood at 40.2 percent and Nepal at 34.8 percent.
Trump did not elaborate on the methodology behind the data or the specific time frame it covered. However, the post has drawn attention to the varying levels of reliance on government assistance among immigrant communities in the United States.
