A Dhaka court on Monday imposed a travel ban on Md Asaduzzaman Hiru, reportedly an adopted son of Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, his wife Israt Jahan, and their associate Aktaruzzaman over allegations of corruption and money laundering.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court’s vacation judge Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun issued the order following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
ACC Public Relations Officer Tanjir Ahmed confirmed the development, saying ACC Assistant Director Nasrullah Hossain submitted the application seeking the travel ban.
According to the petition, the ACC is investigating allegations that Asaduzzaman and others amassed illegal wealth through smuggling, hundi operations, customs evasion and other irregularities by abusing political influence, and laundered money abroad.
The petition said reliable sources indicated that the accused were preparing to leave the country, which could hamper a fair investigation.
Considering the petition, the court ordered the restriction on their foreign travel in the interest of ensuring an effective probe.
