Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has expressed profound grief and concern following a deadly drone attack on a United Nations peacekeeping base in Abyei, Sudan, which resulted in six casualties among Bangladeshi peacekeepers.
In a statement issued Saturday, the chief adviser said, “I am deeply saddened by the news of the martyrdom of six of our brave peacekeepers and the injury of eight others while they were performing the noble duty of establishing peace and stability.
“Bangladesh’s immense contribution to UN peacekeeping is internationally recognised; this sacrifice of our heroes is a matter of national pride and, at the same time, one of deep sorrow.”
He prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls and conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved families. He also wished for the swift recovery of the injured peacekeepers.
Yunus added, “A request has already been made to the United Nations on an urgent basis to ensure the highest standard of treatment and necessary support for the injured peacekeepers. The government will stand by the families of the peacekeepers in this difficult time.”
In the statement, he strongly condemned this act of terrorist attack, stating that assaults on peacekeepers constitute a serious crime against international peace and humanity.
He called upon the United Nations and the international community to take effective measures to further strengthen the security of peacekeepers.
The statement also noted that the Government of Bangladesh will remain in close contact with the UN to ensure the swift repatriation of the bodies of the fallen peacekeepers and proper medical care for the injured.
