Former lawmaker and freedom fighter major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman formally joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Saturday after meeting the party’s Ameer Shafiqur Rahman.
The meeting was held around 9am at Jamaat-e-Islami’s central office, where former BNP leader Akhtaruzzaman expressed confidence in the party’s ideology, patriotism, and commitment to protecting the country’s independence and sovereignty.
In the presence of the Jamaat chief, he completed the primary associate membership form, officially enrolling in the party, according to a press release.
He said he intends to dedicate the remainder of his life to upholding Islamic values, serving national interests, and safeguarding Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty. He also pledged loyalty to Jamaat-e-Islami’s principles, organisational discipline, and party ideology.
Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar and Assistant Secretary General Maulana Abdul Halim were present at the ceremony.
Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman is a veteran of the Liberation War, a senior political figure, and a key organiser in several democratic movements.
After independence, he remained active in politics and social welfare initiatives. A retired officer of the Bangladesh Army, he was elected twice as a Member of Parliament from the Kishoreganj-2 constituency on a BNP ticket and continues to work for the recognition and rights of freedom fighters.
