Former Brazil and Chelsea midfielder Oscar is preparing to retire from professional football. The decision follows a health scare that raised serious concerns about his heart.

Oscar recently returned to his boyhood club Sao Paulo after many years abroad. His comeback season was difficult. He suffered a fractured vertebra, and reports say doctors noticed early signs of a heart issue during that time. Those concerns became serious after a sudden incident at training.

The 34 year old collapsed while taking part in an interval test at the club’s training ground. He was using an exercise bike when he began to feel unwell. Medical staff rushed him to hospital, where he was admitted to intensive care as a safety measure. Tests later confirmed he had vasovagal syncope, a condition that causes a sudden fall in heart rate and blood pressure.

After further medical advice, Oscar informed Sao Paulo that he plans to step away from football. An official statement is expected in the coming days. The move is understood to be based on health reasons and long term safety.
